The nurse costumes you see parading around at fancy dress parties have very little to do with nurse costumes in real life, at any time throughout this profession's history. However, since in a way we are paying homage to these amazing people who look after us when we are down, a little historical exploration cannot hurt.

The Nursing Profession: A Quick Trip Down History Lane

The nursing profession only became widely acknowledged as a result of Florence Nightingale's work in the Crimean War. In fact, she is widely recognized as the founder of the nursing profession and she opened the first school dedicated to training nurses, "The Nightingale Training School", at the St. Thomas' Hospital in 1860.

It was through her work in the Crimean War, when she dedicated herself to healing the sick and wounded, doing rounds through her patients in the middle of the night carrying a lamp, that led to her fame. She also gathered a lot of statistics connected to patient mortality during the war that was invaluable to later medical research.

Florence Nightingale essentially pioneered the healthcare system as we know it today since it was through her social reform that trained nurses were introduced to care for the paupers as well as the rich. She also was responsible for bringing trained nursing to America as she trained Linda Richards, "America's first trained nurse," who went on to establish nursing schools in the U.S. and Japan.

Nurse Costumes: More than a Uniform

Nurse costumes represent much more, however, than medical care since they are the ones that look after a patient from the moment they enter the hospital until the leave. It is quite often for the patient to form an emotional attachment to the nurse out of gratitude and this emotional attachment has come to be known as the Nightingale syndrome.

Nurse Costumes: The Fun Side

There are those who believe that men find themselves attracted to nurses due to the fact that they represent motherly care. However, the majority of nurse costumes one sees on Halloween have little to do with motherly care and much more to do with another type of care that men are certainly not adverse to.

Sexy nurse costumes combine the innocent concept of being cared for with a revealing outfit that promises much more, which is quite a lethal combination. With a barely there outfit that shows off a woman's most interesting assets it is no wonder that men can't take their eyes off women wearing sexy nurse costumes.

After all, the unspoken promise is that the lady will take care of all of his needs and desires. So the question is what is there not to be attracted to? This is why sexy nurse costumes are also extremely popular for couples who want to add a little spice to their love life.

Of course, most professional uniforms have received a sexier makeover so one can be anything from a sexy police officer to a firefighter and the reaction would be the same. Of course, none of these costumes say "I'm going to take care of you" quite like nurse costumes, which is worth remembering when you are shopping around for a costume either for a fancy dress party or just to add a little spice in the bedroom.
